Ampicillin trihydrate belongs to the β-lactam antibiotic class (MIC50 = 3.12 μg/ml). It competitively inhibits transpeptidases that cause cell wall disruption in Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It is active both in vitro and in vivo.

Ampicillin trihydrate has a variety of preparations and specifications, and their administration methods, routes, absorption rates, and stability are different, each with its own characteristics. Ampicillin trihydrate is a semi-synthetic broad-spectrum penicillin. The antibacterial mechanism is to prevent the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall, so it can not only inhibit its proliferation, but also directly kill the bacteria. The effect on gram-positive bacteria is similar to that of penicillin. It has better effect on Streptococcus viridans and Enterococcus, but it has poor effect on other bacteria.
